New Delhi/Siliguri, 26 July 2025 –
In a key development that raises hopes for better transportation in North Bengal, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has officially responded to Darjeeling MP Shri Raju Bista’s request regarding the establishment of Metro Rail Services in Siliguri and other railway-related proposals.
The letter, dated 16 July 2025, confirms that the concerned directorate has been instructed to examine the matter in detail and expedite the process.
“The concerned directorate has been asked to have the matter examined in detail regarding expediting the establishment of Metro Rail Services in Siliguri and surrounding areas, along with other railway-related demands as mentioned in your letter,” reads the letter from the Railway Minister.
What Did Raju Bista Propose?
On 25 July 2025, Raju Bista had shared that he met Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and submitted a comprehensive proposal including:
- Namo Bharat Rapid Rail System connecting:
- Siliguri to Malda (via Raiganj, Islampur, Naxalbari, etc.)
- Siliguri to Hashimara (via Sevoke, Malbazar, Banarhat, etc.)
- Future link to Rangpo post completion of the Sevoke-Rangpo Rail Line
- Metro Rail Project in Siliguri Metropolitan Region to ease city congestion and benefit over 50,000 daily commuters
- Railway Coach Factory in the Siliguri-Terai area to boost regional employment and manufacturing

🧭 Why It Matters
Siliguri, known as the Gateway to the Northeast, is a crucial hub connecting Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Northeast India. Despite its strategic and commercial importance, poor transportation infrastructure continues to limit its growth.
“These proposed projects—Rapid Rail, Metro, and a Coach Factory—are essential to unlock the true economic and social potential of Siliguri, Darjeeling Hills, Terai, Dooars, and the Northeast,” said Bista.
The letter from Minister Vaishnaw serves as a positive affirmation that the Railway Ministry has taken the proposals seriously and internal processes are now underway to evaluate feasibility, implementation, and prioritization.
“I am hopeful that with continued dialogue and support, we will soon witness tangible steps towards realizing these transformative projects,” Bista stated optimistically on social media.
This formal acknowledgment marks a crucial first step in bringing modern and high-speed rail services to North Bengal. If executed, these projects would revolutionize urban and regional connectivity, provide employment, and enhance tourism and trade across borders.
