Honda CR-V e:FCEV: Pioneering the Future of Sustainable Mobility
TOKYO, JAPAN, July 2025 — Honda Motor Co., Ltd. has made a revolutionary move in the world of clean mobility with the world premiere of its CR-V e:FCEV, the first Japanese hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) equipped with a plug-in charging function. Officially launched during the H2 & FC EXPO Tokyo on February 28, 2024, this innovative vehicle marks a new era of combining hydrogen power with plug-in electric convenience.
With the CR-V e:FCEV, Honda combines the long driving range and quick refueling of hydrogen vehicles with the ease of charging a battery like a traditional electric vehicle. This cutting-edge SUV is designed to meet the demands of both daily city driving and long-distance travel—making it ideal for eco-conscious users around the globe.

Key Features of the CR-V e:FCEV
- Dual Power Advantage
The CR-V e:FCEV offers a hydrogen range of over 600 km and an additional battery-powered EV range of over 60 km, based on WLTP standards. With only a 3-minute hydrogen refueling time, it delivers stress-free, long-distance driving. - Plug-In Charging Function
It is the first Japanese FCEV to allow plug-in charging, offering the flexibility of home charging using Level 2 AC charging (SAE J1772) for everyday convenience. - External Power Output for Emergencies
With up to 1500W AC output, the vehicle can be used as a backup power source for homes, during power outages, or at outdoor events using Honda’s Power Supply Connectors or DC output via CHAdeMO. - Eco-Friendly Interior
The vehicle uses bio-based synthetic leather and boasts a two-level cargo space designed around the hydrogen tank—combining functionality with sustainability. - Advanced Fuel Cell Technology
Developed in partnership with General Motors (GM), the new fuel cell system reduces cost to one-third of Honda’s previous Clarity Fuel Cell model, while doubling durability and improving low-temperature resistance.

CR-V e:FCEV Joins the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25
In a major move to promote sustainability, Honda recently announced its support for the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25, to be held from September 13–21, 2025. As an official global partner of the event, the Honda CR-V e:FCEV will be used as the head umpire vehicle during both the men’s and women’s marathon races.
What makes this partnership stand out is Honda’s commitment to using “green hydrogen”, which is produced using renewable energy with zero CO₂ emissions, aligning perfectly with the event’s environmentally-responsible goals.
The vehicle will sport a special WCH Tokyo 25 wrap and showcase Honda’s eco-technology on a global stage. Honda will also provide CUV e: electric scooters as camera bikes for marathon coverage, further minimizing noise and emissions.
In addition, the Honda logo will appear on bibs worn by approximately 1,000 female athletes, reinforcing its support for women in sports.
To further engage the public, Honda launched a dedicated World Athletics webpage:

Production and Global Sales Plan
- The CR-V e:FCEV is built at Honda’s Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio, USA.
- It will be exported to Japan first, with North American sales starting by end of 2025.
- This model is based on the 6th generation CR-V and integrates Honda’s Fuel Cell System Manufacturing (Michigan) tech.
A Vision Beyond 2025
Honda’s ultimate goal is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 under its “three-pillar” approach:
- Carbon Neutrality
- Clean Energy
- Resource Circulation
With over 30 years of hydrogen technology research, Honda has led the development of FCEVs—from the FCX in 2002 to the Clarity Fuel Cell in 2016. The CR-V e:FCEV is the next bold step in this legacy.
The Honda CR-V e:FCEV is not just an SUV; it’s a symbol of future-ready, sustainable mobility. With its blend of hydrogen fuel cell technology, plug-in convenience, external power capabilities, and environment-friendly materials, Honda is redefining how we view electric mobility.
Whether it’s powering a race, a road trip, or even your home during a blackout, the CR-V e:FCEV is more than a vehicle—it’s Honda’s commitment to a cleaner, smarter world.
