Gangtok, 10th October 2025:
In a heartwarming act that beautifully blends compassion with civic responsibility, the Government of Sikkim’s Transport Department has taken a remarkable step toward promoting empathy for all living beings. The department has officially implemented the directive to display the powerful slogan “Be Kind to Animals” on every public transport vehicle across the state — a message that will now travel through the hills, towns, and villages of Sikkim, inspiring thousands every single day.
This compassionate move goes far beyond a simple directive; it is a reminder that kindness towards animals is an essential part of humanity itself. It reflects Sikkim’s long-standing commitment to environmental harmony and ethical living, encouraging everyone — from bus drivers to daily commuters — to carry the message of compassion wherever they go.
This noble initiative was sparked by a heartfelt appeal from two devoted animal lovers, Ms. Neelam Subba and Ms. Kritima Gurung of Save Animal India, who wrote to the Sikkim National Transport Department (SNT) urging them to bring to life an earlier notification issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Government of India. Their dedication and love for voiceless beings ignited a chain of positive action that has now set a shining example for other states to follow.
Be Kind to Animals – A Small Act of Compassion with a Big Impact
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, through its letter No. RT-11017/04/2025-MVL dated 25th February 2025, had directed all states and union territories to display slogans promoting animal welfare on public transport vehicles. The central directive, issued under Article 51A(g) of the Constitution of India, emphasizes the fundamental duty of every citizen to protect and improve the natural environment and to show compassion for all living creatures.
Responding to this, Neelam Subba and Kritina Gurung, members of Save Animal India, took a proactive step. They submitted a handwritten request letter to the Secretary, Sikkim National Transport Department, urging the department to implement the central directive in Sikkim. Their letter highlighted the importance of promoting kindness toward animals and enclosed a copy of the original government circular from MoRTH. Their message was simple yet powerful — to remind every commuter and driver that compassion towards animals is a shared responsibility.
Acting upon this request, the Government of Sikkim’s Transport Department issued an official notification dated 10th October 2025, confirming the implementation of the directive across the state. The notification mandates that all public transport vehicles registered in Sikkim must display the slogan “Be Kind to Animals” prominently on both the front and back sides of the vehicles.
According to the notification:
- The slogan may be written in English, Hindi, or the regional language.
- The minimum character height of each letter should be 150 mm (15 cm) for visibility.
- The text must be in bold and contrasting colors for clarity.
- It can be displayed using durable paint or high-quality weather-resistant stickers.
The directive further instructs all transport operators and vehicle owners to ensure immediate compliance, emphasizing that compassion is not just an emotion but a civic duty.
The activists’ appeal and the government’s quick response symbolize the growing awareness about animal welfare and road safety in Sikkim. The slogan “Be Kind to Animals” will now be seen on buses and other public vehicles, inspiring thousands of travelers daily to act with kindness and care.
Speaking about the initiative, an official from the Transport Department stated that the decision aligns with Sikkim’s progressive environmental and ethical policies, reaffirming the state’s commitment to coexistence with nature and animals. Following the notification, both Neelam Subba and Kritima Gurung expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the Transport Department for their positive and timely response.
By being one of the first states to officially implement this humane directive, Sikkim once again sets a powerful example for the rest of India. Known for its eco-friendly policies, organic mission, and wildlife protection initiatives, Sikkim continues to inspire others to embrace the values of compassion, coexistence, and care. The initiative stands as a beautiful reminder that kindness costs nothing, but means everything — especially to those who cannot speak for themselves
