Sikkim

Gangtok, July 21: The Press Club of Sikkim (PCS) celebrated its 22nd foundation day with a grand event at Manan Kendra, themed “Celebrating the roots that make us stronger and the vision that guides us forward.” The event was graced by Chief Minister Mr. Prem Singh Tamang, who announced significant initiatives to support journalists in Sikkim, reflecting the state government’s commitment to enhancing press freedom and journalistic standards.

Sikkim’s Chief Minister’s Announcements

In his address, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang congratulated PCS for their dedication to upholding journalistic ethics and standards. He emphasized the crucial role of the media as the eyes and ears of society and announced significant grants for the recipients of the Kangchendzonga Kalam Purashkar 2024 and Lagansheel Yuva Patrakar Purashkar 2024, who will receive Rs. 1,01,000 and Rs. 51,000, respectively.

The Chief Minister also unveiled plans for comprehensive medical insurance for journalists in consultation with Central Referral Hospital, Tadong. This initiative aims to provide journalists with necessary medical care. Additionally, the Chief Minister announced the formulation of criteria for granting pensions to journalists, ensuring their financial security after years of dedicated service. These pensions will be provided as a grant-in-aid from the Chief Minister’s Discretionary Grant.

Accreditation Cards and Website Launch

To enhance journalistic access and recognition, the Chief Minister revealed that the Information and Public Relations Department will work on providing effective press accreditation cards for journalists. These cards will serve as formal recognition of their professional status, granting them access to various events and resources across the country.

During the event, the Chief Minister launched the official PCS website and presented the annual awards for 2024. Senior journalist and copy-editor of Summit Times, Mr. Subash Rai, received the Kangchendzonga Kalam Purashkar 2024. Mr. Nitesh R Pradhan and Mr. Suben Pradhan were awarded the Lagansheel Yuva Patrakar Purashkar 2024. Senior journalist Mr. Kamal Mukhia was also felicitated for his excellence in journalism.

Address by PCS President and Felicitations

PCS President Mr. Bhim Rawat highlighted the club’s journey since its establishment in 2002, expressing gratitude to the state government and other stakeholders for their support. He emphasized the role of media as the fourth pillar of society, ensuring access to truthful, timely, and relevant information. Mr. Rawat also thanked the state government for initiating short-term media courses for accredited journalists in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Mass Communication.

The event also saw the felicitation of the Chief Minister for his support to journalism, and the recognition of Mr. Kiran Rasaily and Mr. Shovan Mitra for their unwavering support towards PCS. Newspaper vendors Mr. Bhim Bahadur Rai, Mr. Kazi Burathoki, Mr. Kuber Basnet, and Mr. Ashok Oberoi were honored for their invaluable services.

Comparing Press Freedom: India vs. Nordic Countries

While the initiatives announced by the Chief Minister of Sikkim are commendable, it’s essential to compare them with the standards of press freedom in countries like Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. These Nordic countries consistently rank at the top of the Press Freedom Index due to their supportive legal frameworks, minimal state interference, and a culture that values free speech and independent journalism.

India, currently ranked 159 out of 180 nations in the 2024 Press Freedom Index, faces significant challenges such as censorship, harassment, and violence against journalists. In contrast, Nordic countries actively support initiatives like comprehensive medical insurance, pension plans, and accreditation systems for journalists, setting a benchmark for press freedom and journalistic ethics.

Ensuring Effective Implementation

For the announced programs in Sikkim to effectively contribute to press freedom, they must be implemented transparently and inclusively. Ensuring that all journalists, regardless of their affiliation, can benefit is crucial. Additionally, broader efforts to create a safer and supportive environment for journalists, addressing issues such as harassment, censorship, and violence, are necessary.

By adopting best practices from countries like Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, and ensuring the proper implementation of supportive measures, India can make significant strides towards enhancing press freedom and supporting the essential work of journalists in upholding democracy and informing the public.
