Elevating Sikkim’s Tourism
The purpose of this ropeway isn’t just to provide an easy way to the top. It’s part of a larger project initiated in 2016 to boost tourism in Sikkim. With funds from the PM-DevINE scheme, and French expertise through the Poma Group, the ropeway project faced many challenges, yet overcame them to become a reality.
Dapper to Bhaleydhunga Ropeway : From Himalayan Challenge to Engineering Triumph
This isn’t just any ropeway. It’s the second toughest in Asia and ranks among the top five in the world! The reason? A super-steep 60-degree slope and rocky terrain made construction a herculean task. Yet, with the commitment of both Indian and French engineers and workers, the “impossible” project became possible.
The 3.5 km cable car in Sikkim offers a swift and efficient journey, taking passengers just 13 minutes one way and 26 minutes for a return trip. Utilizing the cutting-edge mono-cable technology, renowned as the best globally, this ropeway is equipped to ensure a seamless experience. It boasts a total of 18 gondolas, with each having the capacity to comfortably accommodate eight passengers. Additionally, the ropeway structure is impressive, comprising 18 towering pillars, the tallest of which reaches up to 48.50 meters.
As passengers embark on this thrilling ride up the steep slopes, they are treated to serene views, including the plains of West Bengal. What’s truly captivating is the contrast, where travelers can transition from non-snowy terrains to snowy vistas in mere minutes. Furthermore, the journey culminates in a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view of Sikkim, showcasing the destination’s unparalleled beauty.
Challenges Overcome
Building on Bhaleydhunga’s rocky cliff wasn’t easy. Materials couldn’t be transported manually, so a special material ropeway was built just for this purpose. Everything, from machinery to materials, had to be imported from France.
Special machines, known as ‘Spiders’, were used to construct the towers, which vary in height, the tallest being a whopping 48.50 meters!
Despite these challenges, safety was a top priority. Amazingly, no accidents were reported throughout the project’s duration, a proof to the dedication and expertise of all involved.
