Siliguri, August 25: Sometimes dreams take years of struggle, but with dedication and the right support, they finally come true. Prayash Welfare Development Society for Disabled Persons in Siliguri is living such a moment, as Darjeeling MP Shri Raju Bista has sanctioned ₹10 lakh from his MPLAD fund to build a proper shelter for its residents.
A Journey That Began With a Dream
The society started in 2013 with only 7 blind and 12 differently-abled brothers and sisters. They dreamed of a place where people with disabilities could live with dignity, receive care, and get opportunities to grow.
At first, they faced many challenges. They had to struggle to get official recognition as a registered society. Later, they received registration under 12AA and 80G.
👉 What does this mean?
- 12AA: This allows NGOs (non-governmental organizations) to be recognized by the government as a charitable society.
- 80G: This allows people who donate to the NGO to get tax benefits.
Getting these registrations was not easy, but it gave the society a strong base to move forward.

Living With Limited Resources
For years, the members of Prayash lived without proper rooms or facilities. There was no permanent building and no regular funding. However, the people of Siliguri, local well-wishers, and a few NGOs always supported them with food and daily needs.
As Society President Aditya Modak said, “We never lacked food because Siliguri’s people stood by us. But what we always dreamed of was a proper home for everyone — a safe place with dignity.”
Today, the society cares for over 50 residents, including 42 children and 10 elderly people who are either blind or differently-abled.
What is MPLAD Fund?
The new hope came with the support of Darjeeling MP Raju Bista.
👉 What is MPLAD?
- MPLAD stands for Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme.
- It is a government scheme where every MP can use funds for development work in their constituency.
- Each MP can recommend projects like building schools, roads, health centers, or community buildings.
Earlier, Raju Bista had promised ₹5 lakh for Prayash, but due to delays in releasing funds, the money did not reach on time. This time, he personally visited the society, interacted with the children and elderly, and doubled the support to ₹10 lakh. He also handed over necessary permissions to start work before Durga Puja.

A Step Towards Dignity
While meeting the residents, Raju Bista praised the volunteers and staff for their selfless work. He assured that the society will always have his support.
“We will continue supporting such initiatives that make a real difference in the lives of the most vulnerable in our community,” Bista said.
The ₹10 lakh funding will be used to build a proper shelter home. This will finally give the residents of Prayash a roof over their heads, safe rooms, and a better environment to live in.
A Positive Future Ahead
The announcement has filled everyone with joy. For the differently-abled residents, this is not just about money — it is about recognition, dignity, and the assurance that they are not forgotten.

As President Aditya Modak expressed, “On behalf of all our brothers and sisters, I thank Shri Raju Bista ji. This fund will finally give us a home where everyone can live with respect.”
With this support, Prayash is now set to transform from a place of survival into a place of development. The residents will not only have a roof to sleep under but also an environment where they can dream bigger.
