Jade Bird Display (JBD) has shared some exciting news: they’ve created a red MicroLED that shines brighter than ever before, reaching up to 1,000,000 nits. This is a groundbreaking achievement, and it promises to make AR (augmented reality) glasses, smart glasses, and tiny projectors even better.
Before this, JBD’s red MicroLEDs weren’t as bright compared to other colors in their Hummingbird AR device range. To give an idea, in 2021, their red LEDs were at 300,000 nits, then 500,000 nits in 2022, and 750,000 nits in February 2023. Now, with a 1,000,000 nit brightness, these red LEDs are as bright as the blue ones, although not as bright as the green ones which shine at 5,000,000 nits.

However, thanks to this improvement, JBD’s tiny Hummingbird projector, which weighs just 1 gram, can now shine up to 5 lumens using only a small amount of power. When used with special lenses, this projector can create a display that’s really bright for viewers.

JBD mentioned that making the red MicroLEDs brighter was a big challenge for the whole industry. But now, they’re proud to have crossed the 1 million nit mark. They explain that their success comes from using a special material called aluminum gallium indium phosphide (AlGaInP). JBD says this material is perfect for producing bright red light. They also mentioned their work on other technologies helped achieve this bright light.

What’s great is that this extra brightness doesn’t mean using more power. So devices like AR glasses will still last long without needing a charge often. While brighter red LEDs in AR glasses and small projectors might not seem that big a deal, this tech could also make our TVs and computer screens better.
