134th Durand Cup 2025 – The city of Kokrajhar came alive with energy and pride as it hosted the spectacular opening ceremony of the 134th Durand Cup 2025. Known as Asia’s oldest football tournament, the Durand Cup returned to Kokrajhar for the third consecutive year, turning the peaceful town into a vibrant hub of football, culture, and unity.
A crowd of over 14,000 enthusiastic fans filled the SAI Stadium, witnessing a celebration that blended traditional performances, thrilling aerial displays, and heartfelt speeches. But the moment that stood out for many was the presence of Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri, whose words and actions lit up the entire evening.
Sunil Chhetri: Heart of Indian Football Steals the Show
As the Captain of the Indian National Football Team, Sunil Chhetri arrived at the stadium, he was welcomed with thunderous applause and admiration from the crowd. His attendance added immense value to the event, especially for the youth of Northeast India who see him as a role model.
Speaking at the ceremony, Chhetri praised the crowd and the stadium atmosphere, saying:
“I wasn’t expecting such a fantastic turnout. The pitch is in great condition, and the energy from the people here is just outstanding. Football can truly bring people together and build communities.”

Military aviation displays added a dramatic touch to the evening. The crowd was thrilled by aerial paragliders, helicopters, and a stunning fly-past by Sukhoi‑30 MKI fighter jets, symbolising the tournament’s strong connection to India’s Armed Forces.
The event was inaugurated by Shri Pramod Boro, Hon’ble Chief Executive Member (CEM) of BTC, and attended by several high-ranking dignitaries, including:

Inaugural Match: ITBP FT Wins Against Morning Star FC
After the opening ceremony, the crowd witnessed a competitive football match between the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Football Team (ITBP FT) and Karbi Anglong Morning Star FC (KAMS FC).
The match ended with a 2–1 victory for ITBP FT. Morning Star FC showed great resilience, even after being reduced to ten players due to a red card. Despite the loss, the team earned respect from fans and opponents for their spirited performance.
The quality of the game impressed Sunil Chhetri, who applauded both sides for their determination and effort.
